I smiled when I read this post and decided to write something about it because I think Duane’s comments really makes sense. And although it is only Duane’s opinion as a listener and it does not necessarily represent the actual thoughts of other podcast subscribers, I guess, this should give podcasters some ideas about things/strategies that may turn-off their listeners or subscribers.
Duane stated that as a listener, he does not want those shows where podcaster/s keeps talking about podcasting like how to produce a podcast or how they are running their show. Well, I guess this is natural because it is really upsetting when the hosts always talk about their podcasting whereabouts, and teaching their audiences how to podcast when their topic should be gadgets, celebrities or comics. Unless of course, the podcast show is really about podcast and podcasting. Remember, we listen because of your show’s genre, so it is just expected that hosts should stick with it.
Irregular and unpredictable episodes is another thing that Duane will not going to listen to your show. And I guess, everybody will do the same too. Podcast listening can easily become a habit especially if you learn or laugh every episode. We want reliable and true to schedule podcast shows and as for me, I don’t want too long episode with so many side comments unless I am listening to a comedy podcast.
Well, Duane mentioned more things that make him not to listen on a podcast, like requesting the listeners to vote for their show at the specified podcast network and so on…but I can already tolerate this. I know that as podcasters, they are somehow obliged to encourage or at least invite their subscribers to vote for them to strengthen and make their show more popular. This is fine with me as long as they keep it simple and as much as possible; please mention it at the end of the show.
